Dorm Room Design
Our goal at AKL is to create an inviting dorm space that integrates storage and function. Dorms can be challenging, because you are limited on space and have strict parameters to go by, so we put our heads together and came up with some fun and creative designs that take all these things into consideration.
Be minimal in adding design elements, the spaces are super small in the dorm room so we want to take this into consideration when adding decor, less is more!
Some colleges may have policies when it comes to decorating your dorm, such as no nails in walls, so make sure to check on that before you start purchasing.
To jazz up the walls use command strips to showcase art pieces, or better yet apply peel and stick wallpaper to bring some texture or a pop of color to drab walls.
Make a list of the essentials, i.e bedding, towels, toiletries, etc and then add in a few decor pieces.
Add functional storage that can be used for multiple things, storage ottoman, crates, and baskets are a great way to hide away unsightly things on a budget.
The overhead lighting in dorms tends to be awful, so add a pretty lamp to your desk which can create a relaxing atmosphere. And it’s great for studying too!
Add in a rug, this will elevate any space and make it feel complete.
Add a faux plant to bring some life into the space without having to keep something alive.
Splurge a bit on comfy bedding, nothing like crawling into bed after a long day.
Mirrors are a great addition because one, you need a place to get ready and make sure your outfits are on point and two, they create the illusion of more space.
Add in a wall photo display or a pin board, so you can display some of your fav photos of your friends and family. A great way to combat the dreaded home sickness.
Remember to coordinate with your roommate, they may have things that they want to use in the space so it is best to touch base.
Add pull out bins under the bed, remember we are trying to maximize storage in a small space so this is a great way to do that.
Most importantly put some thought into what you want your space to look and feel like, remember this is your home away from home so you want it to be a space you love to go back to after a long day of studying.
